Orofacial Granulomatosis

Orofacial granulomatosis (pronunciation: /ˌɔːroʊˈfeɪʃəl ˌɡrænjʊloʊməˈtoʊsɪs/) is a rare inflammatory condition affecting the mouth and sometimes the face and neck. The term is derived from the Greek words "oro" meaning mouth, "facial" referring to the face, and "granulomatosis" indicating the formation of granulomas.

Definition

Orofacial granulomatosis is a condition characterized by persistent or recurrent soft tissue enlargement, oral ulceration and a variety of other oral signs. It is a subtype of granulomatous diseases, which are characterized by the formation of granulomas, small areas of inflammation in tissue.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of orofacial granulomatosis include swelling of the lips (cheilitis) and face, oral ulcers, and a variety of other oral signs. Other symptoms may include difficulty in speaking, eating, and swallowing (dysphagia) due to the swelling.

Causes

The exact cause of orofacial granulomatosis is unknown. However, it is thought to be a hypersensitivity reaction to a certain trigger such as certain foods, dental materials, or microorganisms. Some cases have been associated with Crohn's disease and sarcoidosis.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of orofacial granulomatosis is typically made based on clinical signs and symptoms, patient history, and a biopsy of the affected tissue. Other conditions such as Crohn's disease, sarcoidosis, and Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome must be ruled out.

Treatment

Treatment of orofacial granulomatosis is aimed at reducing symptoms and may include corticosteroids, antibiotics, and dietary changes. In severe cases, surgery may be required.
