Ovarian Clear-Cell Carcinoma

Ovarian clear-cell carcinoma (pronunciation: oh-vair-ee-an kleer-sel kar-si-noh-muh) is a rare subtype of ovarian cancer that is often resistant to the platinum-based chemotherapy typically used to treat ovarian cancer.

Etymology

The term "clear-cell" refers to the clear appearance of the cells under a microscope, while "carcinoma" is a term used to describe a cancer that begins in the skin or in tissues that line or cover internal organs. The term "ovarian" refers to the organ in which the cancer originates.

Definition

Ovarian clear-cell carcinoma is a type of epithelial ovarian cancer, which starts from the cells on the surface of the ovaries. It is characterized by large clear cells and/or cells with a hobnail appearance. This type of cancer is less responsive to standard chemotherapy regimens and often has a poorer prognosis compared to other types of ovarian cancer.

Symptoms

Symptoms of ovarian clear-cell carcinoma are similar to other types of ovarian cancer and may include abdominal bloating or swelling, quickly feeling full when eating, weight loss, discomfort in the pelvis area, changes in bowel habits, such as constipation, and a frequent need to urinate.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of ovarian clear-cell carcinoma typically involves a combination of a physical exam, pelvic exam, blood tests, imaging tests, and a biopsy.

Treatment

Treatment for ovarian clear-cell carcinoma typically involves surgery to remove as much of the cancer as possible, followed by chemotherapy. However, because this type of cancer is often resistant to traditional chemotherapy drugs, research is ongoing to find more effective treatments.
