Pharmacoinformatics

Pharmacoinformatics (pronounced: far-ma-co-in-for-mat-ics) is an emerging field that combines the disciplines of informatics and pharmacology to optimize the discovery, development, and use of drugs.

Etymology

The term "Pharmacoinformatics" is derived from the words "pharmacology" and "informatics". Pharmacology is the branch of medicine that deals with the uses, effects, and modes of action of drugs. Informatics refers to the science of processing data for storage and retrieval.

Definition

Pharmacoinformatics is defined as the application of informatics principles and methods to the understanding and use of drugs. It involves the use of computational techniques to analyze and interpret drug data, predict drug behavior, and guide drug development.

Related Terms

  • Bioinformatics: The application of computer technology to the management of biological information. It is often used in the field of pharmacoinformatics for drug discovery and development.
  • Chemoinformatics: The use of computer and informational techniques applied to a range of problems in the field of chemistry, including in the areas of drug discovery and design.
  • Pharmacogenomics: The study of how genes affect a person's response to drugs. This relatively new field combines pharmacology and genomics to develop effective, safe medications and doses that will be tailored to a person's genetic makeup.
  • Pharmacokinetics: The study of how the body affects a specific drug after administration through the mechanisms of absorption and distribution, as well as the chemical changes of the substance in the body.
  • Pharmacodynamics: The study of the biochemical and physiological effects of drugs on the body or on microorganisms or parasites within or on the body and the mechanisms of drug action and the relationship between drug concentration and effect.
