Pupilometer

A Pupilometer (pronounced pyoo-puh-lom-i-ter) is a medical device used primarily by Ophthalmologists and Optometrists to measure the distance between the pupils of an individual's eyes, known as the Pupillary Distance (PD). This measurement is crucial for the accurate fitting of Eyeglasses and Contact Lenses.

Etymology

The term "Pupilometer" is derived from the Latin word "pupilla", meaning "little doll", and the Greek word "metron", meaning "measure". The combination of these words accurately describes the function of the device - to measure the pupil.

Usage

The Pupilometer is used in the field of Optometry and Ophthalmology to ensure the correct positioning of lenses in eyeglasses or to fit contact lenses properly. The device is held up to the patient's eyes, and the practitioner adjusts the settings until the two illuminated points seen through the viewfinder align with the centers of the patient's pupils. This measurement is then used to correctly align the optical centers of the lenses with the patient's pupils, ensuring optimal visual clarity and comfort.
