RICE

RICE (pronounced /raɪs/) is an acronym for a treatment method for soft tissue injuries which is widely accepted in the field of sports medicine. The term stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.

Etymology

The term RICE was coined by Gabe Mirkin in his Sportsmedicine Book in 1978. The term is derived from the first letters of the four treatment steps recommended to treat soft tissue injuries: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.

Rest

Rest (pronounced /rɛst/) is the first step in the RICE protocol. It involves limiting activity and giving the injured area a chance to heal. This is necessary because continued activity could lead to further injury.

Ice

Ice (pronounced /aɪs/) is the second step in the RICE protocol. It involves applying cold to the injured area. This can help to reduce swelling and pain.

Compression

Compression (pronounced /kəmˈprɛʃən/) is the third step in the RICE protocol. It involves applying pressure to the injured area to help reduce swelling.

Elevation

Elevation (pronounced /ˌɛlɪˈveɪʃən/) is the fourth and final step in the RICE protocol. It involves raising the injured area above the level of the heart to help reduce swelling and pain.
