Safety Engineering (pronunciation: /ˈseɪfti ˌɛndʒɪˈnɪərɪŋ/) is a discipline of Engineering that applies broad-based knowledge of systems to ensure that they operate in a manner that safeguards the health and well-being of individuals, the environment, and society at large.

Etymology

The term "Safety Engineering" is derived from the English words "safety" (from the Old French sauveté, meaning "state of being safe") and "engineering" (from the Latin ingenium, meaning "cleverness" and ingeniare, meaning "to contrive, devise").
