Semen Extender

Semen extender (pronunciation: /ˈsiːmən ɪkˈstɛndər/) is a solution used in the process of artificial insemination to increase the longevity and viability of spermatozoa during storage and transportation.

Etymology

The term "semen extender" is derived from its function. "Semen" is the biological term for the male reproductive fluid that contains sperm, and "extender" refers to its role in prolonging the life and enhancing the performance of the sperm.

Function

Semen extenders are used to dilute the semen to create a larger volume for insemination, thus extending the potential use of a single semen sample. They also provide a protective medium for the sperm during the cooling and freezing processes, which can otherwise be damaging. The extenders often contain nutrients to support the sperm, and antibiotics to control bacterial growth.

Types

There are several types of semen extenders, including egg yolk extender, skim milk extender, and glycerol extender. The choice of extender depends on the species of animal, the method of insemination, and the storage and transportation conditions.
