sinuses - (pronounced) (PAYR-uh-NAY-zul SY-nus) One of many small cavities in the bones around the nose. Paranasal sinuses are named for the bones they contain: frontal (the lower forehead), maxillary (cheekbones), ethmoid (next to the upper nose), and sphenoid (behind the nose). The sinuses open into the nasal cavity (space in the nose) and are lined with cells that produce mucus to keep the nose from drying out when you breathe
