Specsavers (/ˈspɛkˌseɪvərz/) is a multinational optical retail chain, which operates mainly in the UK, Ireland, Australasia and the Nordic countries. The company was founded by Doug Perkins and Mary Perkins in 1983.

Etymology

The name "Specsavers" is a combination of the words "spectacles" and "savers", indicating the company's mission to provide affordable eyewear.

History

Specsavers was founded on the Guernsey island in 1983 by Doug and Mary Perkins. They had previously run a successful optician's business in Bristol, England. The company expanded rapidly, and by 1984, it had stores in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Spain, Australia and New Zealand.

Services

Specsavers provides a range of services including eye examination, contact lens fitting, and prescription glasses and sunglasses sales. They also offer hearing tests and hearing aids in some locations.
