Stepfamily

A Stepfamily (pronunciation: /ˈstɛpˌfæmɪli/), also known as a blended family or reconstituted family, is a family where at least one parent has children that are not genetically related to the other spouse or partner. Either one or both parents may have children from previous relationships. Children in a stepfamily may live with one biological parent, or they may live with each biological parent for a period of time.

Etymology

The term "stepfamily" comes from the Old English word "steop-", which means bereaved. The word "stepfamily" was used to denote the family of one's spouse, who was usually deceased.
