The name Subhash is of Sanskrit origin, meaning "eloquent speaker". Mukhopadhyay is a common Bengali surname, derived from the term "Mukhopādhyāya", which is a combination of "Mukho" (meaning 'head' or 'chief') and "Upādhyāya" (meaning 'teacher' or 'priest').

Career

Mukhopadhyay was born on January 16, 1931, in Hazaribagh, British India. He earned his medical degree from the University of Calcutta, where he later served as a faculty member. In 1978, Mukhopadhyay achieved a significant milestone in the field of reproductive medicine by creating the world's second and India's first test-tube baby, named "Durga", using in vitro fertilisation. Despite his groundbreaking work, Mukhopadhyay faced significant opposition and criticism from the Indian medical community and government, leading to his tragic suicide in 1981.

Legacy

Mukhopadhyay's pioneering work in IVF was posthumously recognised by the Indian government in 2002. His life and struggles were depicted in the 2010 film, "Ek Doctor Ki Maut" ('Death of a Doctor'), directed by Tapan Sinha. Today, Mukhopadhyay is remembered as a trailblazer in the field of reproductive medicine, and his contributions continue to impact the lives of countless individuals and families worldwide.
