TIMI

TIMI (pronounced tee-mee), an acronym for Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction, is a clinical trial group based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. The group has conducted several important clinical trials that have influenced the practice of cardiology.

Etymology

The term "TIMI" is derived from the medical procedure it represents, Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction. "Thrombolysis" (Greek: θρόμβος, thrómbos, "clot"; λύσις, lýsis, "loosening") refers to the breakdown of blood clots, "myocardial" pertains to the myocardium or the muscular tissue of the heart, and "infarction" (Latin: infarctus, from infarcire, "to stuff") refers to tissue death due to lack of oxygen supply.
