Tunga penetrans

Tunga penetrans (/ˈtʊŋɡə pɛnɪˈtrænz/), also known as the chigoe flea or jigger, is a parasitic insect found in most tropical and sub-tropical climates. It is the smallest known flea, measuring 1 mm across.

Etymology

The term "Tunga penetrans" is derived from the Latin Tunga, meaning "a minute object" and penetrans, meaning "penetrating". The common name "chigoe" is believed to have originated from the Carib language, while "jigger" is derived from the English word "chigger", which is a term for a mite.

Life Cycle

The life cycle of Tunga penetrans involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female flea burrows into the skin of a warm-blooded host, where it feeds on blood and lays its eggs. The eggs are then expelled onto the ground, where they hatch into larvae. The larvae feed on organic material in the soil and then pupate. The adult fleas emerge from the pupae and seek out a host, thus completing the cycle.

Medical Significance

Tunga penetrans is the causative agent of a condition known as tungiasis, a parasitic skin disease characterized by severe inflammation, itching, pain, and secondary infections. If left untreated, tungiasis can lead to serious complications such as gangrene, tetanus, and sepsis.

Treatment

Treatment for tungiasis involves the removal of the embedded flea and the application of topical antibiotics to prevent secondary infections. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary. Prevention of tungiasis primarily involves the use of insect repellents and wearing protective footwear in areas where the fleas are prevalent.
