Wind Chill

Wind chill (pronounced: /wɪnd tʃɪl/), also known as wind chill factor, is a calculated measurement of the perceived decrease in air temperature felt by the body on exposed skin due to the flow of air.

Etymology

The term "wind chill" comes from the chilling effect of wind on the skin. It was first used in Antarctic exploration, and became popular in the 20th century.

Definition

Wind chill is the lowering of body temperature due to the passing-flow of lower-temperature air. Wind chill numbers are always lower than the air temperature for values where the formula is valid. When the apparent temperature is higher than the air temperature, the heat index is used instead.

Calculation

The calculation of wind chill is complex and involves a mathematical formula that takes into account the temperature of the air and the wind speed. The formula is:

T_wc = 35.74 + 0.6215T - 35.75(V^0.16) + 0.4275T(V^0.16)

where T_wc is the wind chill index, based on the Fahrenheit scale; T is the air temperature in degrees Fahrenheit, and V is the wind speed in miles per hour.
