Zbigniew Religa

Zbigniew Religa (pronunciation: [ˈzbiɡɲɛf rɛˈliɡa]) was a renowned Polish cardiac surgeon and politician. He was born on December 16, 1938, and passed away on March 8, 2009.

Etymology

The name Zbigniew is of Slavic origin and means "to dispel anger". The surname Religa is a common Polish surname.

Career

Religa was a pioneer in the field of cardiology, and he performed the first successful heart transplant in Poland in 1985. He also developed and implemented the Polish network for organ transplantation.

In addition to his medical career, Religa was also a politician. He served as the Minister of Health in the Polish government from 2005 to 2007. He was a member of the Senate of Poland from 1993 to 2005 and again from 2007 until his death in 2009.
