New York weight loss

In the past 30 years, overweight and obesity increased sharply for both adults and children in New York. As overweight status and obesity increase the risk of other medical problems including some cancers, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes, among others, it is important to understand the true causes of weight gain in New York rather than oversimplify it or worse blame the victim for obesity.

According the 2010 Obesity Statistics from CDC:

  • In 2007, 62% of adults in New York were overweight or obese and 16% of high schools students were overweight, based on self-reported height and weight.

Dietary Behaviors of people in New York

  • 38.9% of adults reported having consumed fruits at the recommended level of 2 or more times per day.
  • 24.7% of adults reported having consumed vegetables at the recommended level of 3 or more times per day.

Physical Activity

  • 44.1% of adults achieved at least 300 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity or 150 minutes a week of vigorous intensity aerobic activity (or an equivalent combination).
  • 26.4% of New York’s adults reported that during the past month, they had not participated in any physical activity.

Adolescent Overweight and Obesity New York

Overweight and Obesity

  • 15.6% were overweight (≥ 85th and < 95th percentiles for BMI by age and sex, based on reference data)
  • 11% were obese (≥95th percentile BMI by age and sex, based on reference data) Unhealthy Dietary Behaviors(6)
  • Fruit consumption: 66.1% ate fruits or drank 100% less than 2 times per day during the 7 days before the survey (100% fruit juice or fruit)
  • Vegetable consumption: Data not available in 2010
  • Sugar-sweetened beverage consumption: 24.5% drank a can, bottle, or glass of soda or pop (not including diet soda or diet pop) at least one time per day during the 7 days before the survey.

What went wrong with our diet?

Instead of blaming the victim for obesity, or yourself for obesity, it is important to understand what drives the weight gain, such as insulin resistance that affects up to 71 percent of the entire population out of which 35 percent already have metabolic syndrome.

Confusing choices

With over 20,000 books written on this topic with so much misleading information, let a trained practicing weight loss physician, Dr Prab R. Tumpati,MD educate you on the true science and art of obesity medicine.

Why the food pyramid failed?

The now withdrawn and failed food guide pyramid was a disaster as it advocated a low fat, but glycemic diet that leads to increased risk of insulin resistance which in turn causes weight gain.

Metabolic starvation in the obese

Most people that gain weight are not on a mission to gain weight intentionally. It is the paradoxical metabolic starvation that happens in the obese due to insulin resistance with a compensatory increase in the anabolic hormone called insulin that drives weight gain, hunger and metabolic starvation leading to food cravings, and weight gain!

Weight loss options in New York

In order to lose weight, understand the proven options to lose weight in New York including the following.

  • Low calorie diet (LCD), or Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD)
  • Physical activity for weight loss which only works in combination with diet as exercise on its own is shown to be pretty useless for weight loss since exercise stimulates appetite and builds heavier muscle tissue thereby negating any weight loss with calories burned. However, a combination of low calorie diet and exercise, or diet alone would work for weight loss but not exercise alone.
  • Surgical options for weight loss such as the gastric bypass surgery can be an option for some to lose weight in New York although most might regain the weight even after surgery and a behavior weight loss program is still needed for long term weight loss success in New York.
