2-Arachidonyl glyceryl ether (2-AGE), also known as noladin ether, is an endocannabinoid that is a naturally occurring chemical compound in the body. It is part of the endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in regulating various physiological processes.

Structure

2-Arachidonyl glyceryl ether is an ether lipid derived from arachidonic acid, a polyunsaturated fatty acid. Its chemical structure consists of a glycerol backbone with an ether linkage to an arachidonyl group. This structure is distinct from other endocannabinoids such as anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), which have different linkages and functional groups.

Function

2-AGE acts as a ligand for the cannabinoid receptors, primarily CB1 and CB2. These receptors are part of the G protein-coupled receptor family and are involved in modulating neurotransmitter release in the central nervous system and immune system.

Synthesis

The biosynthesis of 2-Arachidonyl glyceryl ether is not as well understood as other endocannabinoids. It is believed to be synthesized from arachidonic acid and glycerol derivatives through enzymatic pathways that are yet to be fully elucidated.

Biological Activity

2-AGE has been shown to have various biological activities, including anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. It is also involved in the regulation of appetite, pain sensation, and immune response.
