In the kynurenine pathway, 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid serves as a precursor to quinolinic acid, which is a key intermediate in the biosynthesis of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+). This pathway is crucial for maintaining cellular energy balance and redox status.
