4-Aminobenzoic acid

4-Aminobenzoic acid (pronunciation: 4-uh-mee-noh-ben-zoh-ik as-id), also known as PABA or para-aminobenzoic acid, is an organic compound with the formula H2NC6H4CO2H.

Etymology

The term "4-Aminobenzoic acid" is derived from the chemical structure of the compound. The "4-Amino" part refers to the presence of an amino group (-NH2) at the fourth position of the benzene ring. The "benzoic acid" part refers to the presence of a benzoic acid group (-C6H5COOH) in the molecule.

Description

4-Aminobenzoic acid is a white solid, although commercial samples can appear colored due to impurities. It is slightly soluble in water and soluble in many organic solvents. It is commonly used in the manufacture of folic acid and several dyes. In humans, it is considered part of the vitamin B complex.
