AHRQ

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is a federal agency within the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The AHRQ's mission is to produce evidence that makes healthcare safer, higher quality, more accessible, equitable, and affordable, and to work with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and other partners to ensure that the evidence is understood and used.

History

The AHRQ was established in December 1989 as the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) as a part of the Public Health Service (PHS) with the signing of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1989. The agency was reauthorized with the Healthcare Research and Quality Act of 1999, which renamed it as the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

Functions

The AHRQ supports research that helps people make more informed decisions and improves the quality of healthcare services. The agency achieves its mission and goals through its research programs, which generate new knowledge, synthesize and disseminate research results, and provide technical assistance in the use of these results.

Programs

The AHRQ's programs include the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP), the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), and the Evidence-based Practice Centers (EPCs). These programs provide a wealth of data and research results that are used by policymakers, healthcare administrators, healthcare providers, and researchers to improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of healthcare.
