ANSI

ANSI (American National Standards Institute) is a private, non-profit organization that oversees the development of voluntary consensus standards for products, services, processes, systems, and personnel in the United States. The organization also coordinates U.S. standards with international standards so that American products can be used worldwide.

ANSI accredits standards that are developed by representatives of other standards organizations, government agencies, consumer groups, companies, and others. These standards ensure that the characteristics and performance of products are consistent, that people use the same definitions and terms, and that products are tested the same way. ANSI also accredits organizations that carry out product or personnel certification in accordance with requirements defined in international standards.

ANSI in Healthcare

In the healthcare sector, ANSI plays a crucial role in the standardization of health information technology, which includes the creation of standards for Electronic Health Records (EHRs), Health Information Exchange (HIE), and other health IT systems. These standards facilitate the interoperability of health IT systems, enabling them to communicate and exchange data effectively.

ANSI's healthcare standards also include the Health Level Seven International (HL7) standards for the exchange, integration, sharing, and retrieval of electronic health information. These standards are widely used globally and are integral to many healthcare systems.

ANSI Accreditation

ANSI's accreditation programs operate in accordance with international standards and are recognized globally. Accreditation by ANSI signifies that a certification body operates at the highest level of quality and integrity. In the healthcare sector, ANSI accreditation provides assurance that certified EHR technology meets the necessary standards for meaningful use under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act).
