Air pressure (pronunciation: /ɛər ˈprɛʃər/), also known as atmospheric pressure, is the force exerted by the weight of the air in the atmosphere of Earth.

Etymology

The term "air pressure" is derived from the Middle English "air", from Old French "air", from Latin "aer", from Greek "aēr" meaning "air" and the Middle English "pressure", from Late Latin "pressura", from Latin "pressus", past participle of "premere" to press.

Definition

Air pressure is defined as the force exerted on a surface by the weight of the air above it. It is measured in units of force per unit area, typically in millibars (mb) or pascals (Pa).
