Greek veterinarian and CEO of Pfizer
Albert Bourla (born October 21, 1961) is a Greek veterinarian and the chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Pfizer, a global pharmaceutical corporation. He has been with the company for over 25 years, holding various executive roles before becoming CEO in 2019. Bourla is known for his leadership during the development and distribution of the Pfizer–BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.
Early life and education
Albert Bourla was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, to a Sephardic Jewish family. He earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and later a Ph.D. in the biotechnology of reproduction at the same institution. His early academic work focused on the health and reproduction of animals, which laid the foundation for his career in the pharmaceutical industry.
Career
Early career
Bourla joined Pfizer in 1993, starting in the Animal Health Division. Over the years, he held various positions of increasing responsibility across Europe and the United States. His roles included leadership positions in the Animal Health Division, as well as in the Vaccines, Oncology, and Consumer Healthcare divisions.
Leadership at Pfizer
In 2016, Bourla was appointed Group President of Pfizer's Innovative Health business, where he oversaw the development of new medicines and vaccines. In 2018, he became the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Pfizer, responsible for the company's commercial strategy, manufacturing, and global product development.
Bourla was named CEO of Pfizer in January 2019, succeeding Ian Read. Under his leadership, Pfizer focused on scientific innovation and the development of breakthrough therapies. Bourla emphasized the importance of research and development, leading to significant advancements in the company's pipeline.
COVID-19 pandemic
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bourla played a pivotal role in the rapid development and distribution of the Pfizer–BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. His leadership was instrumental in the company's collaboration with BioNTech, a German biotechnology company, to develop one of the first vaccines authorized for emergency use. The vaccine, based on mRNA technology, was a significant achievement in the fight against the pandemic.
