Alteromonadaceae

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Alteromonadaceae is a family of bacteria within the order Alteromonadales. This family of bacteria is known for its diverse metabolic capabilities and its ability to survive in various environments, including marine environments.

Alteromonas macleodii, a species within the Alteromonadaceae family.

Taxonomy

The family Alteromonadaceae was first proposed by Ivanova and Mikhailov in 2001. It currently includes the following genera:

Each of these genera has unique characteristics and metabolic capabilities that allow them to thrive in different environments.

Characteristics

Members of the Alteromonadaceae family are typically Gram-negative, rod-shaped, and motile. They are capable of both aerobic and anaerobic metabolism. Many species are halophilic, meaning they thrive in high-salt environments, and are often found in marine environments.

Ecology

Alteromonadaceae bacteria play a significant role in the carbon cycle and nitrogen cycle in marine environments. They are known to degrade a wide range of organic compounds, including hydrocarbons, and contribute to the recycling of nutrients in the ocean.

Medical relevance

While most Alteromonadaceae bacteria are not pathogenic to humans, some species, particularly within the genus Pseudoalteromonas, have been associated with infections in immunocompromised individuals.

Research

Research into the Alteromonadaceae family has increased in recent years due to their potential use in bioremediation and their role in marine ecology. Their diverse metabolic capabilities make them a promising target for the development of new biotechnological applications.
