Andhra Pradesh (pronunciation: /ˈɑːndrə prəˈdɛʃ/) is a state in the south-eastern coastal region of India. It is the seventh-largest state by land area, covering an area of 162,975 km2 (62,925 sq mi).

Etymology

The name Andhra Pradesh means "State of the Andhras". The term Andhra refers to the people who lived in the region from at least 1500 BCE. The term Pradesh refers to a province or state.

History

Andhra Pradesh has a rich history dating back to the Vedic period. It was ruled by several major dynasties and empires including the Maurya Empire, Satavahana Dynasty, Vakataka Dynasty, Chalukya Dynasty, and Vijayanagara Empire.
