American restaurateur and co-founder of Panda Express

Andrew Cherng (born 1948) is a Chinese-American restaurateur and the co-founder of the fast casual restaurant chain Panda Express. He was born in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, China, and later moved to the United States.

Early Life and Education

Andrew Cherng was born in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, China. He moved to the United States to pursue higher education. He attended Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, where he earned a degree in mathematics. He later obtained a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics from the University of Missouri.

Career

In 1973, Andrew Cherng and his father, Master Chef Ming-Tsai Cherng, opened their first restaurant, the Panda Inn, in Pasadena, California. The restaurant specialized in Mandarin cuisine and was well-received by the local community.

In 1983, Andrew Cherng and his wife, Peggy Cherng, co-founded Panda Express, a fast casual restaurant chain that offers American Chinese cuisine. The first Panda Express was opened in the Glendale Galleria in Glendale, California. The chain has since grown to over 2,200 locations worldwide.
