Andrew J. Feustel is an American geophysicist and NASA astronaut. He is known for his work on the Hubble Space Telescope servicing missions and his contributions to the field of geophysics. Feustel has participated in multiple spaceflight missions, contributing significantly to the maintenance and enhancement of space exploration capabilities.
Early Life and Education
Andrew J. Feustel was born on August 25, 1965, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Lake Orion, Michigan, where he developed an early interest in science and technology. Feustel attended Oakland Community College and later transferred to Purdue University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Solid Earth Sciences. He continued his education at Purdue University, obtaining a Master of Science degree in Geophysics.
Career
Geophysics
Before joining NASA, Feustel worked as a geophysicist for the ExxonMobil Exploration Company, where he was involved in the exploration and development of oil and gas resources. His work in geophysics provided him with a strong foundation in the physical sciences, which later contributed to his success as an astronaut.
NASA Astronaut
Feustel was selected as a NASA astronaut candidate in July 2000. After completing his training, he was assigned to various technical roles within NASA, including work on the Space Shuttle and International Space Station (ISS) programs.
Spaceflight Missions
STS-125
Feustel's first spaceflight was on STS-125, the final servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope, in May 2009. During this mission, he performed three extravehicular activities (EVAs) to repair and upgrade the telescope, ensuring its continued operation and scientific contributions.
STS-134
In May 2011, Feustel flew on STS-134, the penultimate mission of the Space Shuttle program. This mission delivered the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer and other supplies to the ISS. Feustel conducted three EVAs during this mission, further demonstrating his skills in space operations.
Expedition 55/56
Feustel served as a flight engineer on Expedition 55 and commander of Expedition 56 aboard the ISS. During his time on the station, he participated in numerous scientific experiments and conducted several spacewalks to maintain and upgrade the station's systems.
Personal Life
Feustel is married to Indira Devi Bhatnagar, and they have two children. He enjoys auto restoration, guitar playing, and skiing. His diverse interests and skills have made him a well-rounded individual both on Earth and in space.
