Anna Howard Shaw

Anna Howard Shaw (pronounced: /ˈænə ˈhaʊərd ˈʃɔː/) was a prominent suffragist, physician, and Methodist minister in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Etymology

The name "Anna" is of Hebrew origin, meaning "grace". "Howard" is of Old Norse origin, meaning "high guard". "Shaw" is of English origin, meaning "wood".

Biography

Born on February 14, 1847, in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, Shaw moved to the United States at a young age. She became a licensed Methodist preacher in her early twenties, one of the first women to achieve this position. Shaw later earned her medical degree from Boston University and became a practicing physician.

In the late 19th century, Shaw became heavily involved in the women's suffrage movement. She served as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association from 1904 to 1915. Shaw was also a close friend and colleague of fellow suffragist Susan B. Anthony.

Shaw died on July 2, 1919, just a year before the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified, granting women the right to vote.
