Anoxomer
Anoxomer is a synthetic antioxidant that is commonly used in the food industry. It is a polymeric Phenol derivative that is used to prevent the oxidation of fats and oils in food products, thereby extending their shelf life.
Chemical Structure
Anoxomer is a polymer of hydroquinone and formaldehyde, with an average molecular weight of approximately 5000. It is a brownish powder that is soluble in water and alcohol, but insoluble in fats and oils.
Uses
Anoxomer is primarily used as an antioxidant in food products. It is particularly effective in preventing the oxidation of unsaturated fats and oils, which can lead to rancidity and off-flavors. Anoxomer is also used in the production of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, where it serves a similar function.
Safety
The safety of anoxomer has been extensively studied. It is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States, and is approved for use in food products in many other countries as well. However, like all antioxidants, it should be used in moderation and as part of a balanced diet.
