The aortic sinus is an anatomical dilation of the ascending aorta, which occurs just above the aortic valve. It is an important structure in the cardiovascular system, playing a crucial role in the function of the heart and the circulation of blood.

Anatomy

The aortic sinus is located at the root of the aorta, immediately superior to the aortic valve. There are typically three aortic sinuses, each corresponding to one of the three cusps of the aortic valve. These are:

• The right aortic sinus
• The left aortic sinus
• The posterior aortic sinus (also known as the non-coronary sinus)

Each sinus is a small pocket-like structure that allows for the proper closure of the aortic valve cusps during diastole, preventing the backflow of blood into the left ventricle.

Function

The primary function of the aortic sinuses is to facilitate the closure of the aortic valve. During systole, when the heart contracts, blood is ejected from the left ventricle into the aorta. The aortic sinuses help to create a vortex that aids in the closure of the valve cusps, ensuring efficient blood flow and preventing regurgitation.

Additionally, the right and left aortic sinuses give rise to the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle itself. The right coronary artery typically arises from the right aortic sinus, while the left coronary artery arises from the left aortic sinus.

Clinical Significance

The aortic sinuses are clinically significant because they are involved in various cardiovascular conditions. For example, an aneurysm of the aortic sinus, known as a sinus of Valsalva aneurysm, can occur and may lead to serious complications if it ruptures.

Furthermore, the location of the coronary artery origins in relation to the aortic sinuses is important in surgical procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting and aortic valve replacement.
