Ashgabat (Turkmen: Aşgabat, Ашгабат) is the capital and largest city of Turkmenistan. It is situated between the Karakum Desert and the Kopet Dag mountain range in Central Asia. The city is known for its white marble buildings, grandiose national monuments, and extensive use of gold accents in its architecture.

History

Ashgabat was founded in 1881, following the annexation of the region by the Russian Empire. The city developed rapidly as a center of trade and administration. In 1948, a devastating earthquake struck Ashgabat, causing significant destruction and loss of life. The city was subsequently rebuilt during the Soviet era, and it continued to grow after Turkmenistan gained independence in 1991.
