Atlantic County, New Jersey is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States Census, the county's population was 274,534, making it the 15th-most populous county in New Jersey. The county seat is Mays Landing, though the most populous city is Atlantic City, known for its casinos, boardwalk, and beaches. Atlantic County is part of the Atlantic City-Hammonton, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area, as well as the Philadelphia-Reading-Camden, PA-NJ-DE-MD Combined Statistical Area.

History

Atlantic County was officially established on February 7, 1837, from portions of Gloucester County. The area was initially inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans and later settled by Europeans in the 17th century. The county's growth was significantly influenced by the development of Atlantic City as a resort destination in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Geography

Covering an area of approximately 671 square miles, Atlantic County features a diverse geography that includes coastal areas along the Atlantic Ocean, forested regions, and agricultural land. The county is part of the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve, a protected area of unique ecological significance.

Government

Atlantic County operates under a County Executive form of government, with a County Executive elected at-large and a nine-member Board of Chosen Freeholders (renamed to the Board of County Commissioners in 2021) responsible for legislation. The county is divided into several municipalities, which include cities, towns, boroughs, and townships.

Economy

The economy of Atlantic County is heavily influenced by tourism, primarily due to the presence of Atlantic City. The gaming industry, hotels, and entertainment venues are significant employers. Additionally, the county has a strong agricultural sector, particularly in the production of blueberries, and is part of the Outer Coastal Plain American Viticultural Area, supporting a growing wine industry.

Education

Atlantic County is home to several higher education institutions, including Atlantic Cape Community College and Stockton University, which contribute to the local economy and provide educational opportunities for residents.

Transportation

The county is served by major roadways, including the Garden State Parkway and the Atlantic City Expressway, facilitating travel and commerce. The Atlantic City International Airport provides air travel options, and public transportation is available through bus services and the NJ Transit rail service to Atlantic City.
