Transmission

Clinical Signs

In chickens, it can lead to swollen head syndrome, characterized by swelling around the eyes and head. Secondary bacterial infections can exacerbate the condition, leading to increased morbidity and mortality.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of avian metapneumovirus infection is based on clinical signs, serological tests, and molecular techniques such as reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Isolation of the virus in embryonated chicken eggs or cell culture can also be performed for confirmation.

Prevention and Control

Vaccination is the primary method of controlling aMPV in poultry. Both live attenuated and inactivated vaccines are available and are used depending on the subtype and local regulations. Good management practices, including biosecurity measures, are essential to prevent the introduction and spread of the virus.
