Blended whiskey

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Blended whiskey or blended whisky is a product made from a mix of different types of whiskey. It is the product of blending different types of whiskies and often also neutral and near-neutral spirits, coloring, and flavorings. It is generally the product of mixing one or more higher-quality straight or single malt whiskies with less expensive spirits and other ingredients.

History

The history of blended whiskey dates back to the 19th century in Scotland. The practice emerged as a way for distillers to create a consistent product, with each batch tasting the same as the one before it. This was a significant development in the whiskey industry, as it allowed for the production of whiskey on a large scale.

Production

The production of blended whiskey involves the mixing of different types of whiskey to create a product with a flavor that is consistent from batch to batch. This process typically involves the blending of a high-quality single malt whiskey with a lower-quality grain whiskey. The exact proportions of each type of whiskey used in the blend can vary, but the goal is always to create a balanced and flavorful product.

Types

There are several types of blended whiskey, including blended malt whiskey, blended grain whiskey, and blended Scotch whiskey. Each of these types is defined by the specific types of whiskey that are used in the blend.

Blended Malt Whiskey

Blended malt whiskey is a blend of two or more single malt whiskies from different distilleries. This type of whiskey is often characterized by its complex flavor profile, which is the result of the combination of different single malts.

Blended Grain Whiskey

Blended grain whiskey is a blend of two or more single grain whiskies from different distilleries. This type of whiskey is typically lighter and smoother in flavor than blended malt whiskey.

Blended Scotch Whiskey

Blended Scotch whiskey is a blend of one or more single malt Scotch whiskies with one or more single grain Scotch whiskies. This type of whiskey is known for its rich and complex flavor, which is the result of the combination of different Scotch whiskies.
