Bonjela

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Bonjela is a popular brand of oral treatments aimed at providing relief from mouth ulcers, denture sores, and braces or denture rubbing. The brand is owned by Reckitt Benckiser, a British multinational consumer goods company. Bonjela products are available in gel form and are applied directly to the affected area in the mouth.

Composition

Bonjela products contain two active ingredients: Choline salicylate and Cetalkonium chloride. Choline salicylate is a type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by reducing inflammation and pain in the area it is applied. Cetalkonium chloride is an antiseptic that kills various types of bacteria and fungi which can cause mouth infections.

Uses

Bonjela is primarily used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation caused by mouth ulcers and sores. It can also be used to ease discomfort from dentures or braces rubbing against the gums. The gel forms a protective layer over the sore area, helping to prevent further irritation.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Bonjela can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Some of the common side effects include a burning or stinging sensation at the site of application, or an allergic reaction such as skin rash, redness, or itching. In rare cases, it can cause difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Precautions

Bonjela should not be used in children under 16 years of age due to a potential risk of Reye's syndrome, a rare but serious condition. It should also not be used if you are allergic to salicylates or any other ingredient in the product. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before using Bonjela.
