Borsa Italiana
Borsa Italiana is the main stock exchange in Italy. It is based in Milan and was established in 1808. The exchange is responsible for the organization and management of the Italian stock market, including the regulation of listed companies and the trading of financial instruments.
History
Borsa Italiana was founded in 1808 by Eugène de Beauharnais, the Viceroy of the Kingdom of Italy. Initially, it was a small exchange with limited trading activities. Over the years, it has grown significantly and has become one of the major stock exchanges in Europe.
In 1998, Borsa Italiana was privatized and became a joint-stock company. In 2007, it merged with the London Stock Exchange Group, creating one of the largest stock exchange groups in the world. In 2021, Borsa Italiana was acquired by Euronext, a pan-European exchange group.
Structure and Operations
Borsa Italiana operates several markets, including:
- The MTA (Mercato Telematico Azionario), which is the main market for the trading of shares.
- The AIM Italia, a market dedicated to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
- The MOT, which is the market for trading bonds.
- The ETFplus, a market for trading exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
The exchange also provides a range of services, including market data dissemination, post-trading services, and the management of indices such as the FTSE MIB, which is the benchmark index for the Italian equity market.
Regulation
Borsa Italiana is regulated by the Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa (CONSOB), the Italian financial markets regulator. CONSOB oversees the activities of the exchange to ensure transparency, efficiency, and investor protection.
