Bread and Butter Pudding is a classic British dessert that is both comforting and delicious. It is made by layering slices of buttered bread with a custard mixture and baking it until golden and crispy. This article will provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to make this delightful dessert.

Ingredients

To make a traditional bread and butter pudding, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 6 slices of day-old bread
  • 50g (2 oz) of butter, softened
  • 50g (2 oz) of raisins or sultanas
  • 2 eggs
  • 500ml (2 cups) of milk
  • 50g (2 oz) of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Ground nutmeg, for sprinkling

Instructions

Follow these steps to make a delicious bread and butter pudding:

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Spread butter on one side of each bread slice.
  3. Cut the bread slices diagonally to form triangles.
  4. Arrange half of the bread triangles, buttered side up, in the greased baking dish.
  5. Sprinkle half of the raisins or sultanas over the bread.
  6. Repeat the previous two steps with the remaining bread triangles and raisins or sultanas.
  7. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  8. Pour the custard mixture over the bread and let it soak for about 10 minutes.
  9. Sprinkle the top of the pudding with ground nutmeg.
  10. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the pudding is golden and set.
  11. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Serving Suggestions

Bread and butter pudding can be enjoyed warm or cold. It is often served with a drizzle of custard or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. You can also sprinkle some powdered sugar on top for an extra touch of sweetness.
