Bridgeport, Pennsylvania

Bridgeport, Pennsylvania is a borough located in Montgomery County, in the United States. It is situated approximately 18 miles north-west of Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania. The borough is surrounded by the Schuylkill River to the east and the town of Norristown to the south.

History

Bridgeport was originally known as Bridgeport Borough when it was incorporated in 1851. The area was previously part of Upper Merion Township. The borough got its name from the two bridges that were built to connect the region with Norristown across the Schuylkill River.

Geography

Bridgeport covers a total area of 0.8 square miles, all of it land. The borough is primarily flat, with the highest point being approximately 100 feet above sea level. The Schuylkill River forms the eastern boundary of the borough.

Demographics

As of the 2010 Census, the borough had a population of 4,554. The racial makeup of the borough was predominantly White, with a significant African American minority.

Economy

Bridgeport has a diverse economy with businesses in sectors such as manufacturing, retail, and services. The borough is home to several small and medium-sized businesses.

Education

The borough is served by the Upper Merion Area School District. There are also several private schools in the area.

Transportation

Bridgeport is served by several major roads, including U.S. Route 202 and Pennsylvania Route 23. The borough is also served by the SEPTA regional rail service.

Notable people

Several notable individuals have hailed from Bridgeport, including Major League Baseball player Mike Piazza.
