Bronze Star Medal
The Bronze Star Medal is a United States Armed Forces individual military decoration awarded for either heroic achievement, heroic service, meritorious achievement, or meritorious service in a combat zone. The Bronze Star Medal is the fourth-highest individual military award and the ninth-highest by order of precedence in the United States Military.
History
The Bronze Star Medal was established by Executive Order 9419, dated February 4, 1944, and was retroactive to December 7, 1941. The award was conceived by Colonel Russell P. "Red" Reeder in 1943, who felt that an award was needed to recognize the ground troops who were not eligible for the Air Medal.
Criteria
The Bronze Star Medal is awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity in or with the United States Army, United States Navy, United States Marine Corps, United States Air Force, or United States Space Force after December 6, 1941, distinguished themselves by heroic or meritorious achievement or service, not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against an armed enemy.
Design
The Bronze Star Medal is a bronze star 1 1/2 inches in circumscribing diameter. In the center thereof is a 3/16 inch diameter superimposed bronze star, the center line of all rays of both stars coinciding. The reverse has the inscription "HEROIC OR MERITORIOUS ACHIEVEMENT" and a space for the recipient's name. The ribbon is predominantly red with a blue and white stripe on each side.
Notable Recipients
Many notable military personnel have received the Bronze Star Medal, including General Dwight D. Eisenhower, General George S. Patton, and General Douglas MacArthur.
