C6
C6 Vertebra
The C6 vertebra is the sixth cervical vertebra of the spine. It is located in the neck, below the C5 vertebra and above the C7 vertebra. The C6 vertebra plays a crucial role in the structure and function of the spine, and it is involved in many medical conditions and procedures.
Anatomy
The C6 vertebra, like other cervical vertebrae, consists of a vertebral body, a vertebral arch, and several processes. The vertebral body is the largest part of the vertebra and supports most of the body's weight. The vertebral arch forms a protective ring around the spinal cord, and the processes provide attachment points for muscles and ligaments.
The C6 vertebra is unique in that it has a prominent anterior tubercle, also known as the carotid tubercle or Chassaignac's tubercle. This feature is used as a landmark in medical procedures, such as the administration of anesthesia.
Function
The C6 vertebra and its associated intervertebral disc and facet joints allow for a significant range of motion in the neck. This includes flexion (bending forward), extension (bending backward), lateral flexion (bending to the side), and rotation.
The C6 vertebra also protects the spinal cord and the C6 spinal nerve, which provides sensation and motor control to parts of the neck, shoulder, and arm.
Clinical significance
Injuries or conditions affecting the C6 vertebra can lead to C6 radiculopathy, a condition characterized by pain, numbness, and weakness in the areas served by the C6 spinal nerve. This can result from a variety of causes, including disc herniation, spinal stenosis, and trauma.
Treatment for conditions affecting the C6 vertebra can range from conservative measures, such as physical therapy and medication, to surgical interventions, such as discectomy and spinal fusion.
