COVID-19 pandemic in Guyana

The COVID-19 pandemic in Guyana (pronunciation: /ɡaɪˈɑːnə/), refers to the ongoing global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a novel infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), in the South American country of Guyana. The first case in Guyana was reported on 11 March 2020.

Etymology

The term "COVID-19" is derived from COronaVIrus Disease 2019, indicating the year the disease was first identified. The virus itself is named "SARS-CoV-2" due to its genetic similarity to the virus that caused the SARS outbreak in 2002 (SARS-CoV).

Epidemiology

The first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Guyana was reported on 11 March 2020. The patient was a 52-year-old woman who had recently traveled from the United States. Since then, the virus has spread throughout the country, affecting all ten regions of Guyana.
