Calcium pangamate
Calcium pangamate is a compound that is often referred to as Vitamin B15 or Pangamic acid. It is not recognized as a vitamin by the FDA or the EFSA, and its sale is banned in the United States and the European Union due to concerns about its safety and efficacy.
History
Calcium pangamate was first isolated in the 1950s by the Russian scientist A. A. Pokrovsky. It was initially believed to be a new vitamin, and was given the name Vitamin B15. However, subsequent research failed to confirm its status as a vitamin, and it is not recognized as such by most scientific authorities.
Chemical Structure
Calcium pangamate is a calcium salt of Pangamic acid. It is a white, crystalline powder that is soluble in water. Its chemical formula is C10H19NO8.
Uses
Despite the lack of recognition by major health authorities, calcium pangamate is used in some countries as a dietary supplement. It is claimed to have a variety of health benefits, including improving athletic performance, treating autism, and preventing aging. However, these claims are not supported by scientific evidence.
Safety and Efficacy
The safety and efficacy of calcium pangamate have been questioned. The FDA and EFSA have both banned its sale due to concerns about its safety and lack of proven health benefits. Some studies have suggested that it may have toxic effects, particularly when taken in large doses.
