== Carbon–carbon bond ==

A carbon–carbon bond is a covalent bond between two carbon atoms. Carbon–carbon bonds are among the most common bonds in organic chemistry and are the basis for the structure of organic compounds. These bonds can be single, double, or triple bonds, each with distinct properties and reactivity.

Types of Carbon–Carbon Bonds

Single Bonds

A single carbon–carbon bond is a sigma bond (σ bond) formed by the head-on overlapping of atomic orbitals. Single bonds are the most common type of carbon–carbon bond and are found in alkanes.

Double Bonds

A double carbon–carbon bond consists of one sigma bond and one pi bond (π bond). Double bonds are found in alkenes and are more reactive than single bonds due to the presence of the pi bond.

Triple Bonds

A triple carbon–carbon bond consists of one sigma bond and two pi bonds. Triple bonds are found in alkynes and are even more reactive than double bonds.

Bond Length and Strength

The length and strength of carbon–carbon bonds vary depending on the type of bond:

  • Single bonds have the longest bond length and the lowest bond strength.
  • Double bonds have a shorter bond length and higher bond strength than single bonds.
  • Triple bonds have the shortest bond length and the highest bond strength.

Formation and Reactions

Carbon–carbon bonds can be formed through various chemical reactions, including:

These bonds can also be broken through reactions such as:

Importance in Organic Chemistry

The ability of carbon atoms to form stable bonds with other carbon atoms is a fundamental aspect of organic chemistry. This property allows for the formation of complex molecules, including polymers, biomolecules, and pharmaceuticals.

Applications

Carbon–carbon bonds are crucial in various fields, including:
