Caroll Spinney (December 26, 1933 – December 8, 2019) was an American puppeteer, cartoonist, author, and speaker, best known for his work on the children's television series Sesame Street. He portrayed both Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch from the show's inception in 1969 until his retirement in 2018.
Early Life
Caroll Edwin Spinney was born on December 26, 1933, in Waltham, Massachusetts. He developed an interest in puppetry at a young age, inspired by the work of puppeteers such as Puppetry and Jim Henson. Spinney attended Acton-Boxborough Regional High School and later served in the United States Air Force.
Career
Spinney's career in puppetry began in the 1950s, performing in local shows and television programs. In 1969, he joined the cast of Sesame Street after being recruited by Jim Henson. Spinney's portrayal of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch became iconic, earning him widespread acclaim and numerous awards.
Big Bird
Big Bird is an eight-foot-two-inch tall yellow bird who is one of the central characters on Sesame Street. Spinney's performance as Big Bird was characterized by his ability to convey the character's childlike innocence and curiosity. Big Bird has appeared in numerous Sesame Street specials, movies, and live performances.
Oscar the Grouch
Oscar the Grouch is a green, grumpy character who lives in a trash can on Sesame Street. Spinney's portrayal of Oscar was marked by his distinctive voice and grouchy demeanor. Oscar's character provided a humorous counterpoint to the more cheerful residents of Sesame Street.
Personal Life
Spinney was married twice and had three children. He was also an accomplished artist and published several books, including his autobiography, The Wisdom of Big Bird (and the Dark Genius of Oscar the Grouch): Lessons from a Life in Feathers.
Awards and Honors
Throughout his career, Spinney received numerous awards, including multiple Daytime Emmy Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award. In 2000, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Retirement and Death
Spinney retired from performing in 2018, with his final performances as Big Bird and Oscar airing in 2019. He passed away on December 8, 2019, at the age of 85.
