Chemical Abstracts Service

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS; /ˈkɛmɪkəl əbˈstrækts ˈsɜːrvɪs/) is a division of the American Chemical Society. It is a source of chemical information and is best known for its chemical substance databases, which are used in the fields of chemistry, pharmacology, and other related disciplines.

Etymology

The term "Chemical Abstracts Service" is derived from the service's function of providing abstracts of chemical research. The word "chemical" (/ˈkɛmɪkəl/) comes from the Latin chemia, meaning the art of transmuting metals, and the word "abstract" (/əbˈstrakt/) comes from the Latin abstractus, meaning drawn away. The word "service" (/ˈsɜːrvɪs/) comes from the Old English sērvice, meaning religious devotion or a form of liturgy.

Function

The Chemical Abstracts Service provides information about millions of chemical substances, including their properties, uses, and preparation methods. It also provides access to the world's largest collection of organic and inorganic substance information. The CAS Registry, a component of the service, contains over 100 million unique chemical substances.
