The Chief Justice of India (CJI) is the head of the Judiciary of India and the Supreme Court of India. The CJI is responsible for the allocation of cases and appointment of constitutional benches which deal with important matters of law. The CJI also serves as the chief administrative officer for the judiciary.
Appointment
The Chief Justice of India is appointed by the President of India. The appointment is traditionally based on seniority, with the most senior judge of the Supreme Court of India being appointed as the CJI. However, this convention has been deviated from in certain instances.
Tenure
The tenure of the Chief Justice of India is until the age of 65, as per the Constitution of India. The CJI can be removed from office through a process of impeachment by the Parliament of India on grounds of proven misbehavior or incapacity.
Powers and Functions
The Chief Justice of India has several key responsibilities:
- **Judicial Functions**: Presides over the proceedings of the Supreme Court and ensures the smooth functioning of the court.
- **Administrative Functions**: Oversees the administration of the court, including the allocation of cases to different benches.
- **Advisory Role**: Advises the President of India on judicial appointments and other legal matters.
- **Constitutional Role**: Plays a crucial role in the interpretation of the Constitution of India.

The first Chief Justice of India was Harilal Jekisundas Kania, who served from 1950 to 1951. Since then, there have been numerous CJIs, each contributing to the development of the Indian judiciary.
