Early Life and Education
Hughes attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, where he developed an interest in technology and social issues. He later enrolled at Harvard University, where he met Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, and Eduardo Saverin. Hughes graduated from Harvard in 2006 with a degree in history and literature.

He co-founded the Economic Security Project, which promotes ideas such as universal basic income (UBI) to address economic inequality.
