Clonal Hypereosinophilia (kloh-nuhl hy-per-ee-oh-sin-oh-fee-lee-uh) is a medical condition characterized by an abnormally high number of eosinophils in the blood.

Etymology

The term "Clonal Hypereosinophilia" is derived from three words. "Clonal" comes from the Greek word "klōn" meaning twig, referring to the process of asexual reproduction. "Hyper" is a prefix from Greek, meaning over or excessive. "Eosinophilia" is derived from "eosinophil", a type of white blood cell, and the Greek word "philos" meaning loving, referring to the attraction these cells have to the stain eosin.

Definition

Clonal Hypereosinophilia is a subtype of hypereosinophilia, a condition defined by a persistently high eosinophil count in the blood for at least six months, or signs and symptoms of organ involvement. In Clonal Hypereosinophilia, the increase in eosinophils is due to a genetic mutation causing the cells to multiply excessively.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Clonal Hypereosinophilia can vary widely depending on which parts of the body are affected. Common symptoms include fatigue, cough, rash, and abdominal pain. In severe cases, it can lead to damage to the heart, lungs, and other organs.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Clonal Hypereosinophilia typically involves blood tests to measure the number of eosinophils. Genetic testing may also be performed to identify the presence of specific mutations associated with the condition.

Treatment

Treatment for Clonal Hypereosinophilia often involves medications to reduce the number of eosinophils in the blood. In some cases, chemotherapy or stem cell transplantation may be recommended.
