Collybia personata

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Collybia personata, commonly known as the wood blewit, is a species of fungus in the family Tricholomataceae. It is a widely distributed mushroom found in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. This species is notable for its distinctive lilac-colored gills and robust stature.

Description

The cap of Collybia personata is convex to flat, often with a slight central depression, and measures 5–15 cm in diameter. The surface is smooth and can vary in color from pale buff to lilac. The gills are adnate to slightly decurrent, crowded, and exhibit a characteristic lilac hue, which is a key identifying feature.

The stipe is stout, measuring 3–8 cm in height and 1–2.5 cm in thickness, with a fibrous texture. It is typically white to pale lilac, often with a bulbous base. The spore print is pale pink, and the spores are elliptical, smooth, and measure 6–8 by 3.5–5 µm.

Habitat and Distribution

Collybia personata is saprotrophic, thriving on decaying organic matter. It is commonly found in woodlands, hedgerows, and grasslands, often appearing in fairy rings. This species is prevalent in Europe and North America, with a fruiting season from late summer to early winter.

Edibility

The wood blewit is considered an edible mushroom, although it must be cooked thoroughly to break down certain compounds that can cause gastrointestinal discomfort. It is prized for its firm texture and mild flavor, making it a popular choice for culinary use in soups, stews, and sautéed dishes.

Similar Species

Collybia personata can be confused with other lilac-gilled mushrooms, such as Lepista nuda, commonly known as the blewit. However, Lepista nuda typically has a more uniform lilac coloration across the cap and stipe, whereas Collybia personata has a more variable cap color.
