Colombia (pronunciation: /kəˈlʌmbiə/), is a country located in the northwestern part of South America. It is known for its rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. In the context of medicine, Colombia has made significant contributions in various fields such as cardiology, neurology, and oncology.

Etymology

The name "Colombia" is derived from the last name of the explorer Christopher Columbus. It was conceived by the Venezuelan revolutionary Francisco de Miranda as a reference to all the New World, but especially to those territories and colonies under Spanish and Portuguese rule. The name was later adopted by the Republic of Colombia of 1819, formed from the territories of the old Viceroyalty of New Granada (modern-day Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, and Venezuela).
